Simon Visits Indianapolis, Discusses Pilot Program

Deputy Secretary Simon in Indianapolis praised the hard work of students and educators in raising state test scores and meeting Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind. He also discussed the Differentiated Accountability Program pilot, which will allow states -- after meeting four specific eligibility requirements -- to design a more nuanced system to distinguish between schools in need of dramatic intervention and those that are closer to meeting goals.

Spellings Hosts Roundtable in Topeka, Kansas

Secretary Spellings and Kansas State Superintendent Alexa Posny hosted an education policy roundtable with state legislators, educators and business leaders at the Kansas Department of Education in Topeka, Kan. In her opening remarks, Secretary Spellings commended the State's progress in student achievement in grades 3-8 reading and math under No Child Left Behind, especially noting large gains among students with disabilities and low-income students. Secretary Spellings also announced a $947,069 School Improvement Grant for Kansas to help turn around low-performing schools and help Kansas take a greater role in developing and delivering comprehensive leadership and technical assistance to reform schools and districts that are not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

Mesecar Named Assistant Deputy Secretary

Secretary Spellings announced that Doug Mesecar will lead the Office of Innovation and Improvement as Assistant Deputy Secretary on Feb. 29. The Office of Innovation and Improvement (OII) coordinates the implementation of the public school choice and supplemental services provisions of the president's No Child Left Behind Act and oversees the administration of approximately 28 grant programs, including the Public Charter School Program.
